Museum of Local Lore was built in 1937 in the traditional teikan-zukuri style (“Imperial Crown” style) and will show the turbulent geological past of Sakhalin and the Kurils, present the history of the development of the island region from the grey-haired antiquity to the present time, and introduce the nature of the region. The most interesting expositions are the ones devoted to the mysterious people of Asia - the Ainu. Many exhibits of these collections are one-of-a-kind.
The museum garden is rich in rare flowering plants of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands.
